Extra,extra read all about it!
Let's take a peek into our world
"Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of a true education." Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I hope that everyone had a wonderful and long weekend. Please pay close attention to all of the upcoming quizzes for my 2nd, 4th, & 5th Grade Math students. Also, my students in 2nd and 4th grade reading will be having a reading quiz also on Friday, Jan. 22nd. 2nd Grade Math & Reading 2nd Grade Math students have we've been learning how to add 4 two digit numbers and three digit problems with regrouping. Parents please practice this skill with your child every night. It is going to take some of my students lots of practice in order to master this skill. Please use IXL G.1-10 Adding two-digit numbers with and without regrouping, and to add an extra challenge for my students on IXL students can practice adding three-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Our quiz this Friday, Jan 22nd will cover adding two-digit problems with regrouping. In reading the standard that we are focusing on goes in depth on how a passage in a text is structured or organized. We will be covering the five forms of text structures over the next few weeks. For example, Description, Problem & Solution, Compare & Contrast, Sequence and Cause & Effect. Students will be reading different leveled text and using graphic organizers to help them extract the information from the text. Our first text structure is one of the enjoyable by most students - Problem & Solution. Every story ever read always has a problem that must be solved or at times may go unresolved like in the story "Caps for Sale." Why don't you check that book out from the public library and read with your child and discuss the types of problems the main character "The Man" was having as he was attempting to sell is many caps. Then, see if your child can figure out if and how his problem was solved. 4th Grade Math & Reading Parents and students please note that we are winding down our math unit 4 on Fractions and Operations and a study guide will be sent home during the first week of February. The test is slated for Monday, Feb. 8th through Wednesday, Feb. 10th. This test will focus on adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators as well as mixed numbers. It will also include the ongoing skill of finding equivalent fractions. This week our attention will continue to focus on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Please use the IXL R.1-R.12 and S.1-S.7 to help your child practice this very challenging skill that will take some time for many students to master. Our motto is "The More You Practice the Better You Will Become." In reading Ms. Barry will be conducting her 2nd Semester B.A.S Reading assessment on each student to see how much growth they've made since our Nov. 2015 assessment. Students will have a "Cold Read" quiz on Friday, Jan. 22nd, which is a review of ongoing skills using non-fiction leveled text to assess students application of identifying the main idea and supporting details, the use of text features to help them understand what they are reading, as well as locating details within a multi-paragraph text while answering short open-ended questions related to the topic. In addition, this week for one of our whole group lessons will reading the beloved story "Because of Winn Dixie" as students learn how to compare two types of text by reading an excerpt from the actual story and comparing and contrasting the various elements to a video clip of the movie version of the same story. Students will be able to see and discuss the similarities and differences between the written text and another source. (Please see standard below) ELAGSE4RL7: Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text identifying similarities and differences. 5th Grade Math The students have been working hard learning a combination of skills in this new unit. We have been focusing on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators as well as mixed numbers. Our next quiz will be on the above skills on this Friday, Jan. 22nd. Please make sure that your child is practicing this multi-step concept everyday. Students are doing several steps first finding the common denominators using the LCM strategy (The Least Common Multiple). Then, reducing the fraction to its lowest terms. Students learned last week the "Ladder Strategy" in addition to making a T-Chart which is a method that I have been teaching my students to use for years. I bumped into another method which helps students find not only the LCM but also the GCF (The Greatest Common Factor) two terms that students in my class MUST master as we journey through this entire unit. Please see the YouTube video demonstrating the "Ladder Strategy." I believe in equipping my students with multiple ways in which to solve a problem and students have the flexibility to use what they feel most comfortable using to solve a problem. Remember "Practice Makes Perfect." So keep on practicing! Well, until next time when you stop by to take a peek into our world. Have a great week!
