Let's take a peek into our world
Students in 4th & 5th will be taking their math pre-test on Tuesday, Feb. 16th. All unit 4 retest will be on Thursday, Feb. 18th & 19th. With all of the festivities last week my seconders will be finishing up their math test on Tuesday, Feb. 16th. Then, students will be taking their pre-test for unit 5 on Wednesday, Feb. 17th. In this new unit we will be having fun learning about "Planes and Solid Figures." See below for an overview of this new unit. All math retakes for 2nd grade will take place during the week of Feb. 22nd - 26th.
2nd Grade Math Unit 5 - Planes and Solid Figures In this unit students will cultivate spatial awareness by: • further developing understandings of basic geometric figures • identifying plane figures and solid figures based on geometric properties • describing plane figures and solid figures according to geometric properties • expanding the ability to see geometry in the real world • partitioning shapes into equal shares by cutting, slicing, or dividing • represent halves, thirds, and fourths using rectangles and circles to create fraction models • compare fractions created through partitioning same-sized rectangular or circular wholes in different ways • understand what an array is and how it can be used as a model for repeated addition • organize and record data using tallies, simple tables and charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs. 4th Grade Math Unit 5 - Fractions and Decimals OVERVIEW In this unit students will: ● express fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 as decimals ● understand the relationship between decimals and the base ten system ● understand decimal notation for fractions ● use fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 interchangeably with decimals ● express a fraction with a denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with a denominator 100 ● add fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 (including adding tenths and hundredths) ● compare decimals to hundredths by reasoning their size ● understand that comparison of decimals is only valid when the two decimals refer to the same whole ● justify decimals comparisons using visual model 5th Grade Math - Unit 4 Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying & Dividing Fractions Students will continue working on part 2 of unit 4 which will focus on multiplying and dividing fractions. Our unit 4 math part 2 test will be on Monday, Feb. 29th.- Mar. 2nd. The study guide will go home the week of Feb. 22nd. Please note parents that we have already started working on concepts in this portion of the unit as we were wrapping up part 1. Throughout both reading groups in 2nd and 4th grades I will be conducting an IDI (Informal Decoding Inventory) assessment for the next couple of weeks which will help me to pinpoint any areas of weakness across all sectors of reading development. I.E. Phonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, Comprehension etc. to determine what areas of intensive remediation that I need to focus on with my reading students. 4th Grade Reading Students will be reviewing the skill of inferring using hands on mentor text examples. This standard below is an ongoing concept that students tend to have difficulty grasping initially, but with consistent practice they will utilize it in everyday life. As a review to infer means to draw conclusions. Sometimes it can be implicitly or explicitly stated by the author. In this standard we will focus on information that is directly stated and what it means based on the information or clues that the author to express meaning. As for the other standard below main idea and key details, which is also an ongoing concept. Students will use fiction/non-fiction mentor text to discover what the main idea is and then identify the key details that tells more about the main idea. I like to think of main idea as the main location that you want to travel to and the key details as the signals along the way that let's you know that you are heading in the right direction. ELACCRI1: Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. ELACC4RI2: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text. Well, until next time when you stop by to take a peek into our world.

This week across ALL of my math and reading classes we are busy assessing students understanding of specific standards. Some students are solving two step addition and subtraction problems with three to four two digits numbers. Then, others are navigating the paths of simplifying fractions or adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. While, for my reading students my fourth graders are explaining what an allusion is and applying it to real life scenarios. As this shortened week comes to a end on Thursday, Feb. 11th we know that all the students' minds will be consumed with Valentines' Day and all of the sweet goodies that they will indulge in throughout the day. But I want to list a few reasons why I love to teach:
1. The bright eyes of a student when they finally make the connection. 2. Molding the minds of students to achieve in the most difficult of circumstances. 3. Student's laughter it always brings me joy. 4. The beginning of the school year when everything is new and exciting. 5. A heated in-depth class discussion when the thoughts of each student is clicking in unison. 6. A student accomplishing an academic feat and knowing it, and we get to celebrate together. 7. The smiles, hugs, and hi-fives of my students. 8. When old students come back to see you and say THANK YOU! 9. When I hear a students read. 10. When I see students grow in leaps and bounds and know that I had a little something to do with their progress. I could list so many ways that continuously draws me to this profession that I love so much, but .Until next week when you take a look into our world! Hello Parents and Students as we come to the ending of the first month of January we will be also coming to the ending of our math units for both 2nd - 5th Graders in math. A study guide will be sent home with your child on Tuesday, Feb. 2nd and their end of unit assessments will be Monday, Feb. 8th-10th. Please make sure that you complete the study guide and turn it in for a extra credit grade on the first day of the test Monday, Feb. 8th. We will then do any retakes the following week after the long President's Day break between the 16th and 17th of Feb. This week we will focus solely on review of various skills from our current units please see below for a listing of great online websites such as IXL, Think Central, and a new one that I learned about last week called interactivesites.weebly.com at this site students can click on their grade level and the skill that we are currently working on for this unit and find a wide variety of fun games to play while they are reviewing the concepts or skills. 4th Grade Math - Study Resources How can I study? I found a wonderful sight to help students review called Think Central.com/Intervention. It is divided by grade levels and are aligned with Georgia common core standards. There are 4 sections 1. Learn the Math where the computer program teaches you step by step the skill. 2. Do the Math – an opportunity to take small steps with guided practice. 3. Independent Practice – The student will practice several problems by themselves without any assistance and finally 4. Quiz – the student will test their knowledge with a short quiz. Also, a great website that the students love is called interactivesites.weebly.com which has great fraction related games. Please have your child may review the following lessons from the online resource Think Central Interventions – https://www-k6.thinkcentral.com/content/hsp/math/hspmath/na/common/intervention_9780153664021_/start.html L72, L74-L77. You may also review for the test using IXL Lessons on Equivalent Fractions – Q. 4-Q. 6 and on Adding and Subtracting Fractions R.1- R.12, as well as completing the study guide. 5th Grade Math - Study Resources How can I study? I found a wonderful sight to help students review called Think Central.com/Intervention. It is divided by grade levels and are aligned with Georgia common core standards. There are 4 sections 1. Learn the Math where the computer program teaches you step by step the skill. 2. Do the Math – an opportunity to take small steps with guided practice. 3. You may also review for the test using IXL Lessons K.1-K.15 and L.1-L. 20, as well as completing the study guide. To All Students: Please remember, cramming the night before an assessment is not the best way to study! Reviewing the material nightly helps you tremendously. Most importantly, you will be less stressed, and will feel confident on assessment day! 2nd Grade Reading
Our new standard this week will focus on comparing and contrasting two text about the same topic. (See standard below) ELACC2RI9: Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic. We will be reading the all to familiar story "The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse." Students will be able to discuss what similarities and differences that they noticed about the two mice. Then, take the new knowledge of comparing and contrasting and apply it to a fun class activity where they will be able to compare and contrast various household and everyday items. Students will continue to work on skills such as asking and answering questions, identifying text features and how they help them understand the section that they are reading. Parents please make sure that your child reads for at least 15-20 minutes every night and uses the I-Ready computer reading program at least twice a week. These two steps will help your child improve their overall abilities to read fluently and comprehend what they are reading. 4th Grade Reading The fourth grade students will continue to read the captivating historical fiction book "A Lion to Guard Us" as they learn if Amanda and her siblings will make it to the New World and be reunited with their father. In addition, this week students will be learning about an usual skill that is closely related to inferencing. Students will be focusing on "Allusions" which is a reference made through art, a setting, or person that relates back to something or someone else. We will use Greek Mythology to learn more about this skill. For example, "Achilles Heel" which refers to someone's week point or weakness. Parents please note that your child will be taking their unit 4 reading test beginning next Tuesday, Feb; 9th and it will cover the elements of poetry, drama, and prose, compare and contrasting, as well as the application and understanding of allusions within text. Students will be bringing home their Interactive Notebooks as well as other classwork materials to help them prepare for this test. Well, until next time when you stop by to take a peek into our world! As you know last Friday, Jan. 22nd we had a half day due to incoming inclement weather. Therefore, all of the assessments that were scheduled last week will be done this Monday - Friday. Please continue to study each night to prepare for these assessments. We will not be having any additional quizzes this week and will continue to review the skills in all classes from last week's lessons.
In addition, Ms. Barry will continue to B.A.S students in both her 2nd & 4th Grade Reading classes. Please make sure that your child is reading for at least 15 minutes each day. As mentioned prior to our holiday break that we would be introducing a new computer adaptive remediation tool for both reading and math purchased for us by our illustrious Principal, Mary Robson - named I-Ready. A hot pink letter was sent home last Friday, Jan. 22nd with my 2nd grade students informing you of this new program and providing you with your child's username and password. All of my upper grade students have their username and passwords stapled in their agenda books. Please keep this information handy and where ever you go your child can login and begin to work. Also, make sure that your child spends at least 15 minutes a day using this fun program as it helps them to make overall academic improvements in both math and reading. (Please see below) I-Ready & Response to Intervention: Diverse student groups—from those who need the highest levels of intervention to those who need very little intervention beyond regular classroom instruction—experience success with i-Ready because it is truly adaptive to learners at all levels of development and because the structure of the program supports different types of learners. Well, until next time when you stop by to take a peek into our world. Have an AWESOME week! "Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of a true education." Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I hope that everyone had a wonderful and long weekend. Please pay close attention to all of the upcoming quizzes for my 2nd, 4th, & 5th Grade Math students. Also, my students in 2nd and 4th grade reading will be having a reading quiz also on Friday, Jan. 22nd. 2nd Grade Math & Reading 2nd Grade Math students have we've been learning how to add 4 two digit numbers and three digit problems with regrouping. Parents please practice this skill with your child every night. It is going to take some of my students lots of practice in order to master this skill. Please use IXL G.1-10 Adding two-digit numbers with and without regrouping, and to add an extra challenge for my students on IXL students can practice adding three-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Our quiz this Friday, Jan 22nd will cover adding two-digit problems with regrouping. In reading the standard that we are focusing on goes in depth on how a passage in a text is structured or organized. We will be covering the five forms of text structures over the next few weeks. For example, Description, Problem & Solution, Compare & Contrast, Sequence and Cause & Effect. Students will be reading different leveled text and using graphic organizers to help them extract the information from the text. Our first text structure is one of the enjoyable by most students - Problem & Solution. Every story ever read always has a problem that must be solved or at times may go unresolved like in the story "Caps for Sale." Why don't you check that book out from the public library and read with your child and discuss the types of problems the main character "The Man" was having as he was attempting to sell is many caps. Then, see if your child can figure out if and how his problem was solved. 4th Grade Math & Reading Parents and students please note that we are winding down our math unit 4 on Fractions and Operations and a study guide will be sent home during the first week of February. The test is slated for Monday, Feb. 8th through Wednesday, Feb. 10th. This test will focus on adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators as well as mixed numbers. It will also include the ongoing skill of finding equivalent fractions. This week our attention will continue to focus on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Please use the IXL R.1-R.12 and S.1-S.7 to help your child practice this very challenging skill that will take some time for many students to master. Our motto is "The More You Practice the Better You Will Become." In reading Ms. Barry will be conducting her 2nd Semester B.A.S Reading assessment on each student to see how much growth they've made since our Nov. 2015 assessment. Students will have a "Cold Read" quiz on Friday, Jan. 22nd, which is a review of ongoing skills using non-fiction leveled text to assess students application of identifying the main idea and supporting details, the use of text features to help them understand what they are reading, as well as locating details within a multi-paragraph text while answering short open-ended questions related to the topic. In addition, this week for one of our whole group lessons will reading the beloved story "Because of Winn Dixie" as students learn how to compare two types of text by reading an excerpt from the actual story and comparing and contrasting the various elements to a video clip of the movie version of the same story. Students will be able to see and discuss the similarities and differences between the written text and another source. (Please see standard below) ELAGSE4RL7: Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text identifying similarities and differences. 5th Grade Math The students have been working hard learning a combination of skills in this new unit. We have been focusing on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators as well as mixed numbers. Our next quiz will be on the above skills on this Friday, Jan. 22nd. Please make sure that your child is practicing this multi-step concept everyday. Students are doing several steps first finding the common denominators using the LCM strategy (The Least Common Multiple). Then, reducing the fraction to its lowest terms. Students learned last week the "Ladder Strategy" in addition to making a T-Chart which is a method that I have been teaching my students to use for years. I bumped into another method which helps students find not only the LCM but also the GCF (The Greatest Common Factor) two terms that students in my class MUST master as we journey through this entire unit. Please see the YouTube video demonstrating the "Ladder Strategy." I believe in equipping my students with multiple ways in which to solve a problem and students have the flexibility to use what they feel most comfortable using to solve a problem. Remember "Practice Makes Perfect." So keep on practicing! Well, until next time when you stop by to take a peek into our world. Have a great week! During this first full week back to school students will be working on skills in both reading and math that are a continuation of a standards that we ended with in December, or they made be an expansion of new and old standards.
4th Grade Math For Example, although, we are starting a new unit in 4th grade math - "Fractions & Operations" students will continue to work on finding equivalent fractions and use this skill to later expand into other new concepts like "simplifying fractions. We will be having our first math quiz on Friday, Jan. 15th on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators as well as using a variety of strategies to find equivalent fractions. 5th Grade Math Students will begin unit 4 on Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing Fractions by diving head first into adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. We will be having our first math quiz of the year on Friday, Jan. 15th, which students will see problems reviewing adding fractions with like denominators as well as adding fractions with unlike denominators and finding equivalent fractions. 2nd Grade Math In 2nd grade we will go back to numbers and operation in the previous unit we added and subtracted within 100 now my second grade mathematicians will be adding and subtracting within 1000.and expand on the types of math strategies that can be used to use mental math to solve problems. This week we will be completing a computer diagnostic for a new computer based remediation program called I-Ready that students will be able to use both in school and at home. Please be on the lookout next week for a letter detailing this new program as well as your child's Username and Password. Finally, parents as we begin the 2nd semester please make sure that your child is completing their home every night and returns their completed assignment the next day. Well, until next time when you stop by to take a peek into our world. Have a wonderful week! Well we made it to another new year. I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday break. Please note that since this is a short school week that we will be having pretests in all of our math classes from 2nd -5th Grades.
4th Grade Reading In addition, in 4th grade reading we will continue working on the standard related to the Elements of Poetry as well as compare the differences between a poem, drama and a prose. (See standard below). ELAGSE4RL5: Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text. 2nd Grade Reading While, in 2nd grade reading we will continue to work with non-fiction text as students ask and answer questions related to the text and identify he main idea in a multi- paragraph text.(See standard below) ELAGSE2RI1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. ELAGSE2RI2: Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text. Well, until next time when you stop by to take a peek into our world. To all of my parents and students as we wind down the semester and this week I just want to wish everyone a safe and happy holidays. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, or Hanukkah during this time of year it is truly about celebrating the precious time spent with family and friends. Also, while you are out shopping for those gifts please remember to keep in mind those families who may not have much or anything at all during this time of year. Find a way to give back and to remember the true reason for this season. Please read my letter below regarding a class project that I have been doing for the past 14 years. Class Holiday Project The 12 Days of Caring The Children’s Restoration Project Dear Parents & Students, Every year I like to encourage my class family to give back to their communities in some way. This time of year can be very difficult for many families across the United States and most especially here in the Atlanta-Metro area. I would like my students to embrace the true spirit of the season. It is important to me that we teach the lessons of helping others who have much less than we do. It has been my distinct privilege to be involved with CRN (Children’s Restoration Network of Atlanta) located in Roswell, GA for the past 14 years. Each year this group collects toys for approximately 2,000 homeless or displaced children throughout the Atlanta area. Therefore, I am asking that my students in all of my classes join me in donating a new unwrapped toy, board game, or stuffed animal for a child who is living in a shelter here in the metro Atlanta area. I will deliver the donated gifts to the local offices on our behalf. Please bring all unwrapped gifts to school by Thursday, December 17, 2015. Again, thank you for helping to make this holiday season special for some boy or girl here in the Atlanta area. Sincerely, Ms. Luciann Barry EIP Teacher New Prospect Elementary On that note...
